I-DEAS Master-Series is a Computer Aided Design (CAD) system developed by SDRC and later acquired by Siemens PLM. This CAD system has a long history and has been used by engineers and designers to create complex 3D models and designs for various industries such as aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing.

One feature of I-DEAS is its interoperability with other CAD systems. The software is able to import and export files in different formats, making it easy to collaborate with others who may use different CAD systems. I-DEAS file extensions include .mf1, .mf2 (model file), .prt (part), .asm (assembly), .drw, .asc (drawing), .pkg (package file), .arc , .unv, .prg (I-deas Archive, Manufacturing Universal & Program files) and .lis (results file).

In addition to supporting its own file extensions, I-DEAS also supports various native and neutral file formats, including STL, JT, IGES, DXF, DWG, STEP, Parasolid, and NX (PKG). This interoperability with different formats allows for increased collaboration between different software systems and ultimately improves the design and manufacturing process.

STL is a commonly used file format for 3D printing and I-DEAS's ability to support this format allows users to directly 3D print their designs without the need to convert the file to another format. JT, on the other hand, is a lightweight 3D data format used for collaboration and visualization in different industries. I-DEAS's support for JT allows users to easily share their designs with others who do not have access to I-DEAS.

IGES and DXF are neutral file formats that allow the exchange of 2D and 3D data between different CAD systems. DWG is a file format used by AutoCAD, a popular CAD software, and I-DEAS's support for this format allows for easy collaboration between I-DEAS and AutoCAD users. STEP is another neutral file format used to exchange 3D CAD data and Parasolid is a solid modeling kernel used in various CAD systems.

The interoperability of I-DEAS with different file formats and CAD systems was a key factor. The ability to import and export files in different formats allows users to work seamlessly with other software systems and ultimately improves the design and manufacturing process.
