VDA-FS is a CAD data exchange format defined by the German organization VDA (Verband der Automobilindustrie - Flächenschnittstelle). This format was primarily used for interoperability of surface models between CAD systems. However, VDA-FS has been replaced by STEP, another CAD file format. The VDA-FS format relies on the VDA 6.1 quality standard, a German standard initiated by the automotive industry.

Although VDA-FS has been replaced by STEP, it is still important to understand the implications of interoperability in CAD and the importance of the VDA 6.1 standard for companies in the automotive industry. The VDA-FS format was widely used in the past for exchanging surface models between CAD systems. Today, STEP has become the most commonly used CAD data exchange format.
